Practice how to speak Spanish with Spanish who want to practice English
Practica tu inglés con británicos en Café Florin en Playa del Inglés.
Cafe Florin in Playa del Ingles is one of the meeting points for the Intercambio program
started by John Mulkearns at Cafe Florin along with Theresa Coe (author of Spanish Lesson in
the Canary News)
Intercambio provides an opportunity for both English and Spanish speakers to help each other practice speaking and listening to the others langauge.
Intercambio de Indiomas ( langauage exchange) is all about people getting together who are willing to practice speaking their own language with someone who is trying to learn that language; so Spanish speakers help English and English help Spanish.
With partners of near equal ability each spending equal amounts of time speaking Spanish and then English the Intercambio get togethers are social meetings in informal places like Cafe Florin
So if you know any Spanish who want to practice their English with English speakers who want to practice their Spanish tell them about Intercambio de Idiomas

Update and correction:
We like to keep thing clear and as accurate as possible; following a recent publication in the Canary News edition 60 "looking back at one year of Intercambio" we felt the references to Cafe Florin were a little unfair and had a negative tone.
Theresas memory seems to be more about spliiting up from her boyfriend than accurately recalling the first intercambio meeting started by Cafe Florin.
"Bitter Sweet" does
not reflect the experience of our first intercambio group meeting members and I'm sorry to say that, in our opinion, bringing her personal life into the section regarding CAFE FLORIN tainted the impression of an important day in the life of our Cafe.
She went on to talk about people being "frustrated and walking out", this again was a negative use of language and puts the article refering to our Cafe in a poor light, clearly her memory and perspective differs from ours.
We have never been invited by the Canary News to give an account so we are doing so here.
Yes there was not equal number of Spanish and English speakers, the numbers are never equal.
Cafe Florin is a CAFE, people come and go all the time!
After having a cup of coffee all day, not everyone was there to take part in the Intercambio, but the articles tone put the inaugaral day in a poor light.
Theresa Coe is not the founder of Intercambio de idiomas in the south of Gran Canaria, she is co-founder with formally qualified senior teacher John Mulkearns BSc PGCE!

The first meeting of the Lanuguage Exchange Group of Gran Canaria took place at Cafe Florin (
map) on Sunday March 6th at 3.00pm. The mixed group of Spanish and English speakers consisted of around 25-30 people, some of whom were curious and turned up to see how things would work and many of whom were indeed able to practice face to face, exchanging speaking equal amounts of time in English before switching to Spanish.
There are more options including chatting exclusively over the Internet using Skype, Microsoft or Yahoo Messenger so there's really nothing stopping you from joining in.
If you would like to join our Intercambio program in Gran Canaria then just complete the application form below and our resident Spanish and English teachers will try to match you up with a partner to practice with.
You can complete your application online and we will email an acknowledgement of your application and later on with suggestion for partners, or in the meantime if you are north near Las Palmas or the south near Playa del Ingles come along to the next Intercambio de Idiomas de Gran Canaria
